Working with this material refines the child's ability to visually discriminate between color and shape and, like other Montessori materials used by very young children, this work helps develop concentration, willpower, and intelligence. Cubes and parallelepipeds, placed in relation to each other, give a practical representation of the algebraic formula (a + b + c)3, that is, the cube of a generic trinomial. Cubes and parallelepipeds can be combined and observed freely, also performing seriations in relation to the various dimensions. Sensory work with this material is an important preparation for mathematics and algebra.
