Sensorial
A KEY TO THE ENVIRONMENT
Sensorial materials qualify the exploration and knowledge of the environment through the child’s senses. It is a true cultural form that leads to perfectioning one’s personality, at the same level of language or mathematics. The sensorial materials connect the body and the mind thanks to their innate qualities: the isolation of quality, shade and error control which allows the child to correct itself. “With the sensorial materials we give a guide, a kind of impression classification you can get from each sense: colour, sound, noise, form and dimension, weight, tactile impression, smell and flavour… These qualities could be compared to the alphabet: a few sounds compared to countless words. Giving the qualities separately is like giving an exploration alphabet: that is to say, a key to open the doors of knowledge.” (Maria Montessori, The discovery of the child)

This material can be used from three years onwards and develops the sensorial knowledge of plane geometry which will be deepened in the following years. It develops the visual and tactile knowledge of the geometric figures that can be observed consciously in the surrounding area. The sensorial experimentation with straight lines and curves, together with...

This material can be introduced when the child has become acquainted with the cylinder blocks and colour tablets, starting from the yellow cylinders and proceeding to the red, blue and at last green ones. As other sensorial materials the coloured cylinders sharpen many abilities: gross and fine motoric skills, eye-hand coordination, visual perception...

The cubes are used to calculate and compare the volumes of the cubes of the pink tower.

Working with this material refines the auditory capacity up to developing the ability to recognise the sound characteristics of objects even without looking at them (you can do this blindfolded). Like other Montessori materials for very small children, this material helps to develop concentration, will, intelligence and sharpens the observation of the...

Block 1 can be used from the age of 18 months until at least 6 years. It facilitates freedom of choice and concentration. Moreover it is designed to sharpen various abilities: gross and fine motoric skills, eye-hand coordination, visual perception through the education of sight with reference to dimension (this block presents the idea of big/small and the...

Block 2, to be used after block 1, facilitates freedom of choice and concentration, gross and fine motoric skills, eye-hand coordination, visual perception through the education of sight with reference to dimension (this block presents the idea of thin/thick and the related gradations). It also develops the seriation ability and offers the child important...

Block 3, to be used from 24-26 months of age onwards, facilitates freedom of choice and concentration, gross and fine motoric skills, eye-hand coordination, visual perception through the education of sight with reference to dimension (this block presents the idea of short/tall and the related gradations). It also develops the seriation ability and offers...

Block 4 is the last one to be used from 30 months of age onwards because it introduces more complex work with elements of inversely proportional dimensions. It, facilitates freedom of choice and concentration, gross and fine motoric skills, eye-hand coordination, visual perception through the education of sight with reference to dimension (this block...

This material can be used from three years onwards and develops the sensorial knowledge of plane geometry which will be deepened in the following years. The cards show the outlines of the geometric figures in three levels of difficult. The cards are used once the child is confident with the insets. The work strengthens the visual knowledge of the...

Working with this material refines the child's ability to visually discriminate between color and shape and, like other Montessori materials used by very young children, this work helps develop concentration, willpower, and intelligence. Cubes and parallelepipeds, placed in relation to each other, give a practical representation of the algebraic formula...
